Psalms 136:21

Listen to this article

“And gave their land for an heritage: for his mercy endureth for ever.”

1. Context:Psalm 136 is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise to God for His enduring mercy. It is known as the “Great Hallel,” a hymn sung during Jewish festivals. The psalmist highlights God’s mighty acts throughout history, including creation, the deliverance of Israel from Egypt, and His faithfulness in providing for His people.

2. God’s Action:In verse 21, the psalmist acknowledges that God gave the land as a heritage to His people. This refers to the Promised Land, which God gave to the Israelites as an inheritance after they were delivered from Egypt and wandered in the wilderness for forty years. It emphasises God’s faithfulness to fulfil His promises.

3. God’s Mercy:The psalmist underscores that the reason God gave the land as a heritage was due to His enduring mercy. Mercy is the compassionate kindness and forgiveness shown by God to His people, even when they don’t deserve it. It is an essential aspect of God’s character and is emphasised throughout the psalm.

4. God’s Enduring Mercy:The psalmist repeatedly affirms that God’s mercy endures forever. This phrase is mentioned after each line of the psalm (Psalm 136:1-26), emphasising the eternal nature of God’s mercy. It demonstrates that God’s mercy is not limited by time, circumstances, or human failings. His mercy is constant and unwavering.

5. Application:As believers, we can draw several lessons from Psalm 136:21:

  • – God is faithful to fulfil His promises. Just as He gave the land to the Israelites, He is faithful to fulfil His promises to us today. We can trust in His faithfulness and rely on His word.
  • – God’s mercy is enduring. No matter how many times we fail or fall short, God’s mercy is always available to us. We can find comfort and hope in His unwavering love and compassion.
  • – Thanksgiving and praise. Like the psalmist, we should respond to God’s mercy with gratitude and praise. Recognising His faithfulness and mercy in our lives helps cultivate a heart of thanksgiving.
