For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the feare of the Lord. Proverbs 1:29 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed to King Solomon, known for his God‑given wisdom. These early chapters serve as an introduction in which Solomon urges his readers to seek wisdom and avoid the path of foolishness and wickedness. This particular verse is part of the section where Wisdom personified speaks (Proverbs 1:20‑33), within the main body of the book.

Hatred of knowledge: The passage highlights the attitude of those who reject knowledge. In this context, “knowledge” refers to wisdom, understanding, and the fear of the Lord, implying a deliberate rejection of truth, understanding, and the pursuit of God’s ways. Such hatred can stem from arrogance, pride, or a desire to follow one’s own desires rather than submitting to God’s wisdom.

Choosing the fear of the Lord: The fear of the Lord is not about being terrified of God but rather having a reverential awe and deep respect for Him, recognizing His authority, obeying His commands, and seeking His guidance in all areas of life. Aligning oneself with God’s ways reflects this reverential posture and is a deliberate decision to follow His wisdom.

Consequences of rejecting knowledge: Throughout the book of Proverbs, Solomon contrasts the outcomes of wisdom and foolishness. In verses 1:28‑29 he explains that those who hate knowledge will not heed counsel and will suffer the results of their own choices, missing the blessings and guidance that come from walking in the fear of the Lord. By rejecting wisdom they may make unwise choices, suffer the consequences of their actions, and forfeit the blessings that accompany a life aligned with God’s truth.

Application: Proverbs 1:28‑29 serves as a reminder for us to value knowledge, wisdom, and the fear of the Lord in our lives. We should actively seek wisdom through studying God’s Word, seeking guidance from mature believers, and spending time in prayer. It is essential to cultivate a humble and teachable heart, recognizing that true wisdom comes from God. By honoring the fear of the Lord we align ourselves with His ways, experience His blessings, and walk in the path of righteousness.

In summary: The early verses of Proverbs warn against hating knowledge and ignoring God’s counsel. They encourage us to pursue wisdom, humbly submit to God’s guidance, and experience the blessings that come from aligning our lives with His truth.
