He layeth vp sound wisedome for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walke vprightly. Proverbs 2:7 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Bible, providing practical guidance for living a righteous and wise life. The book is traditionally attributed to King Solomon, known for his wisdom. Proverbs 2:7 is part of a passage where the writer urges the reader to seek wisdom and understanding from God.

“He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous”: In this verse, “He” refers to God. The verse highlights that God holds and preserves “sound wisdom” for the righteous. It emphasizes that God is the source of true wisdom, and He keeps it in store for those who follow Him faithfully. “Sound wisdom” refers to wisdom that is reliable, trustworthy, and grounded in truth, implying that God provides practical guidance and discernment for His people.

“He is a buckler to them that walk uprightly”: A buckler is a shield or protective covering. Here it signifies that God serves as a shield or protector for those who live with integrity and righteousness. The phrase “walk uprightly” refers to living a life of moral uprightness, following God’s commands, and conducting oneself with honesty and integrity. The verse suggests that God acts as a defense for those who live in accordance with His ways, guarding and shielding them from harm.

Application and Lessons:

  • The foundation of true wisdom lies in a relationship with God. Seeking wisdom from Him is essential for making sound decisions and living a righteous life.
  • God is the source of wisdom and knowledge. It is through Him that we gain insight, understanding, and discernment to navigate life’s challenges.
  • God rewards righteousness. Those who strive to walk in integrity and obedience to His Word will find that He preserves and protects them.
  • The verse encourages believers to pursue wisdom and righteousness, knowing that God stands as their defender and shield.
