Proverbs 6:22

Posted on 18 May at 15:10
Listen to this article

“When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.”

Context:Proverbs is a book in the Old Testament known for its collection of wisdom literature. Written mainly by King Solomon, Proverbs offers practical guidance for righteous living and acquiring wisdom.

Metaphorical Meaning:In this verse, the writer employs figurative language to describe the benefits of wisdom. The “it” refers to wisdom, which is personified as a companion and guide throughout various aspects of life.

Guidance in Daily Life:The verse suggests that wisdom provides guidance in different circumstances. When you go out, wisdom will lead you, implying that it helps you make wise decisions and choose the right path. Wisdom acts as a moral compass, offering direction and insight in navigating life’s choices.

Protection during Sleep:The verse continues, stating that wisdom will keep you while you sleep. This aspect emphasizes the importance of having a wise and discerning mind even in unconscious or vulnerable moments. Wisdom protects one’s thoughts and influences dreams, guarding against negative influences or wrong choices.

Continuous Learning:The verse concludes by saying that wisdom will talk with you when you awake. This highlights the ongoing nature of wisdom’s presence and instruction. Wisdom is not merely a one-time event or an occasional encounter; it is a lifelong pursuit and companion that continually engages and teaches.

  • Relationship with God:Throughout the book of Proverbs, wisdom is often associated with the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:7). Connecting this verse to a larger biblical context, we understand that true wisdom begins with a reverential relationship with God. Seeking God’s guidance and aligning our choices with His principles is the foundation of acquiring wisdom.

Remember that Proverbs 6:22 is just one verse in a broader context of wisdom literature. Exploring other verses in Proverbs and studying the entirety of God’s Word will provide further insights into the importance of wisdom and its application in our lives.
