Proverbs 7:19

For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:

Proverbs 7:19 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a warning story in Proverbs 7. A young man without good judgment meets an adulterous woman who tries to persuade him to sin. Here she says that her husband is not at home, because he has gone on a long journey.

In the King James Version, the word “goodman” means the husband or master of the house. The woman avoids calling him “my husband.” Instead, she speaks of “the goodman” in a distant way, as if she does not truly belong to him. Her words are not a simple fact. They are a clever lie meant to make the young man feel safe. She wants him to believe that no one will discover them and that there will be no consequences.

This passage shows how temptation often uses false promises. The woman’s speech is part of a larger lesson in Proverbs about the danger of giving in to sin. The book of Proverbs teaches that wisdom helps a person see through such deceit and choose the right path.

This verse warns us about the excuses we make when we are tempted. Sin often appears safe when we think no one is watching. But God sees everything, and every wrong choice has real results. We should be careful when someone tries to convince us that there will be no trouble. We must remember that accountability is not absent, even when it seems hidden.

Ask yourself: Do I ever listen to voices that make sin look harmless? The woman’s words are a reminder that temptation lies. True wisdom looks beyond the moment and considers the future. Trust God’s guidance and stay faithful, even when the path of sin seems easy.
