Proverbs 7:21
With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.
Proverbs 7:21 (KJV)
Context
Proverbs 7 opens with a father urging his son to treasure wisdom and keep his commandments. He then warns about a seductive woman who uses smooth words to trap the young and naive. This verse is the climax of that warning, showing how her persistent speech overcomes the young man’s resistance.
Meaning
The phrase “much fair speech” means an abundance of persuasive and attractive words. Her “flattering lips” are smooth and deceptive, designed to make sin look harmless. The verbs “caused him to yield” and “forced him” show that her words wore down his will. He did not suddenly fall; he was gradually persuaded until he felt compelled to follow her.
This verse teaches that temptation often comes through appealing speech. Flattery can blind a person to danger and make wrong choices seem reasonable. The young man’s downfall was not only her cunning but also his failure to hold firmly to wisdom.
Biblical connections
The chapter later describes the young man following her “straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter” (Proverbs 7:22). That image shows the deadly result of yielding to seduction. Throughout Proverbs, wisdom is pictured as a guard against such deception (Proverbs 2:16-19). True understanding helps a person recognize flattery and resist it.
Application
This warning applies beyond sexual temptation. People can be led astray by flattering words in many areas of life, such as money, pride, or false teaching. Believers must learn to test what they hear against God’s Word. When persuasive speech contradicts wisdom, it should be rejected, no matter how appealing it sounds.
Practical steps include memorizing Scripture, seeking godly counsel, and being honest about personal weaknesses. A person who knows the truth is less likely to be deceived by smooth lies.
Reflection
How easily do kind or flattering words sway your decisions? This verse calls for vigilance and a heart rooted in God’s commandments. The young man lacked discernment, but wisdom is available to all who ask. Let this warning encourage you to guard your heart and hold fast to what is right.
