Proverbs 8:23

I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.

Context

Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings, mostly from King Solomon, offering practical guidance for righteous living. In Proverbs 8, wisdom is pictured as a woman calling to people, showing its great value. This verse declares that wisdom existed before the earth was made.

Meaning

The phrase “set up from everlasting” means wisdom was firmly established before time began. It was not created later or invented by humans. Wisdom is eternal, just as God is eternal. The verse also shows that the earth had a beginning, and wisdom was already present before that beginning. This truth challenges any view that the world is eternal.

Biblical connections

This teaching agrees with other scriptures. Proverbs 3:19 says the Lord founded the earth by wisdom, and Psalm 104:24 praises God’s wisdom in creation. In the New Testament, Christ is called the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24), and all things were made through Him (John 1:3). The main meaning here, however, is the personification of God’s own wisdom, not a direct reference to Christ.
