When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.

Proverbs 8 presents wisdom as a woman speaking directly to readers. The fountains abounding with water are springs and sources of life. Their absence shows a time when creation had not yet taken shape.

Wisdom’s words emphasize that she is not a created thing. She is an eternal reality that belongs to God. This does not mean wisdom is a separate being. Rather, it shows that God’s wisdom has always been with Him and flows from His own nature.

This verse is part of a larger passage, Proverbs 8:22-31, where wisdom describes being present with God during creation.
