Proverbs 8:22

The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.

Proverbs 8:22 (KJV)

Proverbs 8 is part of a collection of wise sayings linked to King Solomon. In this chapter, wisdom speaks as a person, using the voice of a woman who calls people to follow her. The surrounding verses show that wisdom leads in righteousness and justice, and she offers riches and honor to those who love her. This background helps readers see that the verse is not only about the past but also about how people should live now.

The Hebrew word translated “possessed” can mean “acquired,” “created,” or “brought forth.” Different English versions reflect this range. The verse teaches that wisdom existed before any of God’s creative works. This does not mean wisdom is a separate created being. Rather, wisdom is an attribute of God, closely tied to His nature. The phrase “before his works of old” points to a time before the world began. Wisdom was already present, showing that God’s ways have always been wise and orderly.

The New Testament connects this idea to Jesus Christ. Paul calls Christ “the wisdom of God” in 1 Corinthians 1:24, and Colossians 2:3 says that in Christ are hidden all treasures of wisdom and knowledge. John 1:1-3 also speaks of the Word being with God in the beginning and all things being made through Him. These passages help Christians see Proverbs 8:22 as a hint of Christ’s eternal existence. Yet the main point in Proverbs is about the value of wisdom itself, not about a separate divine person.

Because wisdom was present from the very beginning, it is not a late addition to God’s plan. Believers should therefore seek wisdom with confidence. Living wisely means aligning oneself with the foundation of God’s creative order. The fear of the Lord is the starting point for this wisdom, as Proverbs teaches throughout. When a person chooses wisdom, they are choosing what God has always valued.

This verse invites readers to marvel at the eternal nature of God’s wisdom. It also calls for a humble response. Since God’s works are done with perfect wisdom, believers can trust His plans even when they do not understand them. Seeking wisdom is not a small matter; it is a way of participating in God’s own character. The verse encourages a life that treasures wisdom and follows God’s ways with reverence.
