Proverbs 8:19
“My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.”
Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament attributed to King Solomon. It contains a collection of sayings and teachings designed to impart practical wisdom and understanding to its readers.
Personification of Wisdom:In Proverbs 8, wisdom is personified as a feminine figure who speaks in the first person. Throughout the chapter, wisdom is portrayed as calling out to people, offering valuable counsel and insight. Verse 19 is a part of this personification, where wisdom declares the surpassing value of its "fruit" and "revenue."
The Value of Wisdom:In this verse, wisdom asserts that its fruit is better than gold, even better than fine gold, and its revenue surpasses choice silver. It highlights the superior worth of wisdom compared to material wealth. This verse emphasizes that the benefits gained from pursuing wisdom are more valuable than any material possessions or riches one can acquire.
Spiritual and Practical Implications:While the verse acknowledges the value of material wealth (symbolized by gold and silver), it emphasizes that the benefits and rewards obtained from wisdom exceed the worth of material possessions. The "fruit" and "revenue" of wisdom refer to the blessings, insights, discernment, and practical guidance gained through the pursuit of wisdom.
True Wealth and Priorities:Proverbs 8:19 encourages readers to prioritise the pursuit of wisdom above the accumulation of material possessions. It reminds believers that true wealth lies in acquiring godly wisdom, which leads to righteous living, understanding, and discernment in various areas of life.
- Application:As believers, we should prioritise seeking and embracing wisdom, recognising its surpassing value over worldly riches. This involves studying and meditating on God’s Word, seeking His guidance through prayer, and applying the principles of wisdom in our daily lives. By doing so, we can experience the benefits and blessings that come from aligning our lives with God’s wisdom.
