Proverbs 7:17

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.”

Proverbs 7 is part of a collection of wisdom sayings attributed to King Solomon. This particular chapter focuses on the importance of wisdom, understanding, and discretion, warning against the enticements of a seductive woman. Verse 17, within this context, provides a specific illustration of the seductress’s enticing actions.

In this verse, the speaker mentions perfuming their bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. Symbolically, this action represents the seductress’s deliberate effort to create an alluring and enticing environment to attract her prey. Let’s explore the significance of these elements:

Myrrh:Myrrh is a fragrant resin often associated with the theme of love and sensuality. In biblical times, myrrh was a valuable perfume often used in rituals and as an ingredient in cosmetics. By perfuming the bed with myrrh, the seductress seeks to create an atmosphere of sensuality and allure.

Aloes:Aloes were also aromatic and had medicinal properties. While the exact type of aloe mentioned here is uncertain, it likely refers to an aromatic species used for its fragrance. The inclusion of aloes further emphasizes the seductress’s attempt to intoxicate her victim with pleasant scents and lure him into her embrace.

Cinnamon:Cinnamon is a spice known for its sweet aroma and is associated with luxury and exoticism. The seductress uses cinnamon to enhance the overall appeal of her bed, enticing her victim with an atmosphere of indulgence and desire.

Overall, the verse highlights the seductress’s deliberate efforts to create an alluring environment, using fragrances associated with sensuality, pleasure, and opulence. It serves as a cautionary reminder for readers to be vigilant against the temptations of immoral behaviour and to exercise wisdom and discernment in their choices.

The broader message conveyed by this verse and the surrounding passage is to encourage readers to pursue wisdom, discernment, and moral integrity, enabling them to resist the allurements and temptations that can lead to destructive consequences.
