Proverbs 9:9

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Bible, known for its practical advice on how to live a godly and fulfilling life. It offers insights and instructions on various topics, including wisdom, relationships, and the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 9 is specifically focused on contrasting wisdom and folly, personified as two women: Wisdom and Folly.

Instruction to the Wise:In this verse, the writer encourages the reader to give instruction to a wise person. It implies that even those who are considered wise can still grow in wisdom. True wisdom is not stagnant but is open to learning and willing to receive instruction from others. The wise person is humble, recognizing that there is always more to learn and gain.

Teach the Just:The verse also mentions teaching a just person. The just or righteous person is someone who seeks to live in accordance with God’s commands and principles. They are morally upright and strive for justice and righteousness in their lives. This verse emphasizes that even the just person can increase in learning. Regardless of how much knowledge or righteousness one possesses, there is always room for growth and deeper understanding of God’s ways.

Importance of Instruction and Learning:The verse highlights the value of instruction and learning. It suggests that by giving instruction and teaching, both the wise and the just can grow in wisdom and understanding. Learning is an ongoing process, and acquiring knowledge and wisdom is a lifelong pursuit. It requires humility, a teachable spirit, and a willingness to receive guidance and correction.

Application:This verse encourages believers to embrace a posture of humility and a desire for continuous learning. It reminds us that no matter how wise or righteous we may consider ourselves to be, there is always room for growth and improvement. We should seek out opportunities to receive instruction, whether through reading and studying the Scriptures, seeking guidance from wise mentors, or engaging in meaningful discussions with fellow believers. By doing so, we can deepen our understanding of God’s ways, develop greater wisdom, and live more effectively for His glory.

  • Overall:Proverbs 9:9 reminds us of the importance of remaining teachable and open to instruction. It encourages us to pursue wisdom and learning, recognizing that they are lifelong pursuits that can lead to greater understanding and a more fulfilling life lived in alignment with God’s principles.
