Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Proverbs 9:10 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is part of the wisdom literature in the Old Testament. It contains practical and moral teachings, often presented as short, memorable sayings. Proverbs 9 contrasts two invitations: one from Wisdom and the other from Folly, both pictured as women preparing a feast. Verse 10 concludes this section and states the central principle for gaining wisdom.

The phrase “fear of the LORD” is a key theme in Proverbs. It means reverence, awe, and respect for God, not terror. This fear includes a deep awareness of God’s holiness, power, and authority, and it leads to humble submission to Him. It is a filial reverence, like a child’s trust in a loving parent, that leads to obedience and trust.

The Hebrew word for “beginning” can mean both the starting point and the chief or most important part. So the fear of the Lord is not just the first step; it is the foundation and the main principle of all true wisdom. Wisdom is not mainly intelligence or knowledge. It begins with a right relationship with God. This wisdom is practical; it guides one’s choices and life path.

The second line, “knowledge of the holy,” is parallel to the fear of the Lord. This knowledge is not mere information about God. It is an intimate, personal knowledge of the Holy One of Israel. It involves understanding His character, His ways, and His truth. True understanding, then, is inseparable from knowing God. This knowledge is available to all who seek God with a humble heart.

This knowledge leads to discernment and practical living. Understanding means applying what we know of God to daily choices. It is living in line with His principles, values, and commands.

This verse echoes the theme found at the start of Proverbs, where Proverbs 1:7 says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Both verses teach that reverence for God is the doorway to wisdom. Those who lack this fear, no matter how learned, are not truly wise.

This verse encourages us to seek wisdom earnestly. True wisdom is found in a relationship with God and in understanding His ways. We should prioritize seeking God’s presence, studying His Word, and cultivating reverent awe toward Him.

Recognizing God’s greatness and our own limits fosters humility. The fear of the Lord acknowledges that God is the ultimate authority and source of wisdom. This truth makes us teachable and willing to learn from God and from others.

Wisdom is crucial for making sound decisions. By knowing God’s holiness and understanding His ways, we develop discernment that guides our choices. This discernment leads us to pursue righteousness, avoid sin, and align our decisions with God’s will.

The fear of the Lord and the pursuit of wisdom bring personal transformation. As we grow in understanding and apply God’s truth, our character is shaped, and we become more like Christ. Wisdom affects our thoughts, attitudes, and actions, influencing every part of life.

May this verse inspire us to seek wisdom, fear the Lord, and live in alignment with His truth. In this path we find a flourishing and purposeful life, grounded in the knowledge of the Holy One.
