Context

Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Bible, attributed primarily to King Solomon. It consists of practical advice, moral teachings, and insights into human behaviour. Meaning

The phrase “fear of the Lord” does not imply a terrifying or anxious fear, nor a servile fear of punishment. Rather, it refers to a reverential awe, respect, and submission to God. It is recognising God’s authority, holiness, and sovereignty over all things. This fear arises from a deep understanding of God’s character and the acknowledgment of His wisdom, righteousness, and power. It is a filial fear, rooted in a knowledge of God as Father and of His love and grace, especially His forgiving love. This reverential fear is a holy, humble, and trusting disposition toward God, encompassing the whole of religious worship.

The verse highlights that the fear of the Lord is the starting point or foundation of true knowledge. It emphasises that genuine wisdom and understanding come from a right relationship with God. Without this reverence for God, any knowledge gained is incomplete and lacking in spiritual discernment.
