Proverbs 1:6

To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

Proverbs 1:6 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of Old Testament wisdom literature, traditionally attributed to King Solomon, who was renowned for his God-given wisdom. This verse is part of the book’s introduction, where the purpose of the entire collection is stated: to help readers understand proverbs, their interpretation, the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

Proverbs are short, concise statements that convey deep truths. Understanding them requires more than grasping the literal meaning; it involves perceiving underlying principles and applying them to life. The Hebrew word for “interpretation” carries a sense of elegance and beauty, suggesting that understanding proverbs includes appreciating their literary form and being able to explain them clearly to others.

The words of the wise come from individuals who possess not only knowledge but also the understanding of how to apply it practically. These words carry weight and authority, as they come from people who have gained wisdom through experience and a close relationship with God. The phrase “dark sayings” refers to proverbs that are cryptic or difficult to understand, often employing figurative language, symbolism, or riddles. Such sayings challenge the reader to think deeply and seek wisdom actively.

The pattern of dark sayings appears elsewhere in Scripture, such as in Numbers 12:8 and Judges 14:12, indicating a recognized genre of wisdom communication. In the New Testament, Jesus’ use of parables (Matthew 13:10-17) fulfills this pattern: truths hidden from the hardened but revealed to disciples. This shows that the wisdom tradition of Proverbs finds its ultimate fulfillment in Christ, who speaks in parables to reveal the mysteries of the kingdom. The verse also connects with the preceding verse, Proverbs 1:5, where a wise man, by hearkening, attains wise counsels and understanding of proverbial sayings.

Proverbs 1:6 encourages readers to diligently pursue understanding and interpretation of proverbs, along with the teachings of the wise. Gaining wisdom requires effort and a willingness to grapple with complex concepts. By engaging with the proverbs, one can develop discernment, make wise choices, and live a life pleasing to God. This pursuit is not merely intellectual but moral and spiritual, for the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 1:7). Believers are called to value the depth of Scripture, to seek interpretation through study and prayer, and to recognize that true wisdom comes from God and is revealed through His Word.

Consider how you approach the wisdom literature of the Bible. Do you read superficially, or do you pause to ponder the deeper truths? The dark sayings invite you to think deeply and seek wisdom actively. As you study Proverbs, ask God for insight, and let the wisdom you gain shape your decisions, relationships, and character.
