“A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels.”

Proverbs 1:5 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Bible, attributed primarily to King Solomon. It contains practical advice and guidance for leading a godly and prosperous life. In Proverbs 1:5, we are presented with an essential principle of wisdom: the willingness to listen and learn.

The Importance of Listening:The verse begins by emphasizing the significance of being attentive and receptive to wisdom. “A wise man will hear” suggests that a person who is already wise understands the value of listening to others. This implies humility and a willingness to acknowledge that there is always more to learn, regardless of one’s current knowledge or experience.

Listening is an active skill that involves not only hearing the words but also seeking to comprehend the meaning behind them. It involves being open to different perspectives and considering the wisdom shared by others.

The Pursuit of Learning:The second part of the verse states, “and will increase learning.” Here, we see that the wise individual’s commitment to listening is not passive but results in the continuous acquisition of knowledge and understanding. Wisdom is not a static state but rather a lifelong journey of learning, growth, and development.

By actively seeking out knowledge, the wise person expands their understanding of various subjects and gains insights that can be applied to daily life. This pursuit of learning requires diligence, curiosity, and a hunger for truth.

Attaining Wise Counsels:The final part of the verse declares, “and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels.” This indicates that a person who possesses understanding-someone who has gained wisdom through attentive listening and continuous learning-will have access to valuable advice and guidance.

Wise counsels are the insights and guidance offered by individuals who possess wisdom and experience in a particular area. These individuals may be mentors, elders, or those with expertise in a specific field. The wise person, through their commitment to learning, can discern and seek out the valuable advice that can further enhance their understanding and decision-making.
