Proverbs 11:2

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.”

1. Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Bible, attributed to King Solomon. It offers practical advice and insights for living a righteous and successful life. Proverbs 11:2 focuses on contrasting the outcomes of pride and humility.

Certainly! Let’s dive into a Bible study on Proverbs 11:2, as it appears in the King James Version:

The verse begins by highlighting the consequences of pride. “When pride cometh, then cometh shame.” Pride refers to an excessive or inflated sense of self-importance, thinking highly of oneself and looking down on others. The Bible warns that pride leads to shame, suggesting that it ultimately brings disgrace or downfall.

The second part of the verse contrasts pride with humility. It states, “but with the lowly is wisdom.” The “lowly” refers to those who are humble, modest, and have a right view of themselves in relation to others and God. Unlike pride, humility leads to wisdom. True wisdom involves living in alignment with God’s principles, making right choices, and having a proper understanding of oneself and others.

The verse cautions against pride, encouraging us to examine our hearts and attitudes. Pride can manifest itself in various ways, such as arrogance, self-centredness, and a disregard for others. We should seek to cultivate humility by recognising our dependence on God and acknowledging the value and worth of others.

The verse emphasises that wisdom is found with the humble. As we embrace humility, we open ourselves up to God’s guidance and understanding. We should actively seek wisdom through studying and applying God’s Word, seeking counsel from godly individuals, and cultivating a teachable spirit.

Pride can lead to shame and downfall. By recognising the dangers of pride, we can guard ourselves against its negative consequences. Instead, embracing humility can help us avoid the pitfalls of pride and live in a way that brings honour to God and blessings to our lives.

Proverbs 16:18 echoes the message of Proverbs 11:2, stating, “Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Throughout the Bible, we find numerous warnings against pride and exhortations to embrace humility, such as James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5-6.
