Proverbs 11:2

When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

Proverbs 11:2 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature, traditionally attributed to King Solomon. It gives practical guidance for living rightly before God and others. This verse sets two paths side by side: the way of pride and the way of humility. Each path leads to a different outcome.

The first part warns, “When pride cometh, then cometh shame.” Pride is an inflated sense of self-importance. A proud person thinks too highly of himself and looks down on others. Such an attitude brings disgrace, because it sets a person against God and against his neighbours. The second part declares, “but with the lowly is wisdom.” The lowly are those who are humble and modest. They see themselves truthfully, knowing their dependence on God and their need for His help. True wisdom belongs to them.

Humility is not weakness. It is a clear-eyed view of reality. The humble person does not need to exalt himself, because he trusts God to lift him up in due time. This wisdom shapes daily choices and keeps a person from the downfall that pride brings. The verse presents a clear contrast: pride leads to shame, while humility is linked with wisdom.

Proverbs 16:18 echoes this truth: “Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” The same principle appears in James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5-6, where God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. These passages confirm that the contrast in this verse is a consistent biblical teaching. Throughout Scripture, God honors the humble and resists the proud.

This verse calls us to examine our hearts. Pride can appear as arrogance, self-centredness, or a careless disregard for others. We can guard against it by recognising our complete dependence on God and by valuing other people. Humility opens us to God’s guidance. We grow in wisdom by studying His Word, listening to godly counsel, and keeping a teachable spirit. Choose the way of lowliness, knowing that God honors the humble.

Pride promises honour but delivers shame. Humility seems lowly, yet it carries wisdom. Which path will we choose today? The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and that fear leads us to walk humbly with our God.
