James 4:6

Listen to this article

“But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”

Context:The Book of James is attributed to James, the half-brother of Jesus, who wrote to encourage and instruct believers in their Christian walk. This verse comes from a section where James addresses conflicts and divisions among believers and emphasizes the importance of humility.

God’s Provision of Grace:The verse begins with the statement, “But he giveth more grace.” This highlights God’s abundant provision of grace. Grace is God’s unmerited favor, His divine assistance, and empowerment to live according to His will. God generously bestows grace to those who seek Him.

God Resists the Proud:James then quotes from Proverbs 3:34, saying, “God resisteth the proud.” Pride is the opposite of humility and involves an exalted view of oneself and a disregard for God and others. God opposes the proud because pride hinders a person’s ability to submit to Him and receive His grace. The proud rely on their own strength and wisdom, neglecting their dependence on God.

Grace to the Humble:James further emphasizes that God gives grace to the humble. Humility involves recognizing our dependence on God, acknowledging our limitations, and submitting ourselves to His will. When we approach God with humility, acknowledging our need for His grace, He responds with His favour, mercy, and assistance.

Application:James’s message is clear: to receive God’s grace, we must cultivate humility and shun pride. This requires an honest assessment of our hearts, a willingness to surrender our self-sufficiency, and a humble attitude towards God and others. As we humble ourselves before God, He lifts us up and grants us the grace needed to navigate life’s challenges.

  • Overall, James 4:6 reminds us of the importance of humility in our relationship with God. By humbling ourselves before Him, acknowledging our need for His grace, and living in dependence on Him, we position ourselves to receive His abundant provision and favour.
