A tale-bearer reuealeth secrets: but hee that is of a faithfull spirit, concealeth the matter. Proverbs 11:13 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Bible that offers practical advice and principles for righteous living. While traditionally attributed to King Solomon, the collection also includes contributions from Agur (Proverbs 30:1) and Lemuel (Proverbs 31:1). Proverbs 11:13 specifically addresses gossip and the importance of discretion.

The Sin of Talebearing: The verse highlights the actions of a talebearer—a person who spreads secrets or private information about others. Such behavior is condemned because it can cause harm, division, and damaged relationships, running counter to the biblical principles of love, respect, and integrity.

The Faithful Spirit: In contrast, the latter half of the verse describes a person of a faithful spirit—someone trustworthy, loyal, and discreet. Rather than revealing secrets, this individual keeps confidential matters to themselves, demonstrating integrity and reliability.

The Value of Discretion: Proverbs 11:13 underscores that discretion and confidentiality foster trust, strengthen relationships, and protect the well‑being of individuals. These qualities reflect godly character and righteousness.

Application and Reflection: Believers are called to avoid talebearing and to cultivate a faithful spirit. Practical steps include:

  • a. Refrain from spreading rumors or private information about others, being mindful of the impact words can have.
  • b. Cultivate trustworthiness, reliability, and discretion, building a reputation for maintaining confidences.
  • c. Seek God’s wisdom to discern when sharing information is appropriate and when it should remain confidential.
  • d. Encourage open communication and create a safe environment where others feel comfortable sharing without fear of betrayal.
  • e. Honor the trust placed in you by keeping confidences, unless there is a clear, compelling reason to disclose—such as protecting someone’s safety or well‑being.

By practicing discretion and avoiding talebearing, believers contribute to a healthier, more loving, and trustworthy community that glorifies God and reflects the biblical call to love one another and speak words of edification.
