Proverbs 11:13

A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

Proverbs 11:13 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom offering practical principles for righteous living. This verse fits within a section contrasting the righteous and the wicked.

The Hebrew word for talebearer literally means “one who walks about as a slanderer.” This shows gossip is not an occasional slip but a habit of moving from person to person with harmful words. Such a person reveals secrets, betraying confidences. In contrast, a faithful spirit is trustworthy and loyal. The Hebrew word for faithful carries the sense of steadfastness and reliability, showing that keeping confidences is a mark of inner character, not just a single action. Discretion is a sign of faithfulness, and revealing secrets is a breach of trust that can break relationships.

This verse condemns talebearing because it damages relationships and violates love and integrity. The broader context of Proverbs 11 contrasts the righteous and the wicked, and this verse fits that framework: the talebearer acts wickedly, while the faithful person acts righteously. Wisdom includes knowing when to speak and when to remain silent. The faithful person conceals the matter, keeping what was shared in confidence, and this reflects a character of steadfastness that honors God.

Believers are called to avoid talebearing and cultivate a faithful spirit. Practical steps include:

  • Refrain from spreading rumors or private information, being mindful of the impact words can have.

  • Cultivate trustworthiness and discretion, building a reputation for maintaining confidences.

  • Seek God’s wisdom to discern when sharing information is appropriate and when it should remain confidential.

  • Encourage open communication and create a safe environment where others feel comfortable sharing without fear of betrayal.

  • Honor trust by keeping confidences, unless there is a clear, compelling reason to disclose—such as protecting someone’s safety.

Discretion and confidentiality foster trust, strengthen relationships, and protect well-being. By practicing these, believers contribute to a healthier, more loving community that glorifies God and reflects the call to love one another.
