Proverbs 11:16
“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.”
Context:A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches. Proverbs 11:16 (KJV)
A gracious woman retains honor: The word gracious here refers to someone who is kind, compassionate, and full of grace. This verse emphasizes the importance of character over external achievements.
A woman who possesses these qualities will earn and maintain honor in the eyes of others and in society. She is respected for her integrity, kindness, and gentle spirit. This verse encourages women to cultivate such qualities, which bring honor and respect in their interactions with others.
Strong men retain riches: In this part of the verse, the focus shifts to strong men who retain riches. Strong in this context can refer to physical strength, but it can also imply strength of character, wisdom, or influence. The proverb suggests that men who are wise and strong, whether physically or mentally, have the ability to acquire and hold on to material wealth.
However, the verse doesn’t imply that wealth itself is inherently virtuous or that it guarantees honor. Rather, it acknowledges the practical reality that strength and wisdom often lead to success in the acquisition and preservation of wealth.
Overall, this proverb highlights the significance of character and integrity. It suggests that a person’s character, whether male or female, is more valuable than material possessions or achievements. While both men and women can find honor and wealth, the emphasis lies in the virtuous qualities of a gracious woman and the strength and wisdom of men in acquiring and retaining riches.
As with any study of the Bible, it is beneficial to consider the broader context of Proverbs and the rest of Scripture to gain a deeper understanding of God’s wisdom and principles.
