Listen to this article

“The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is known for its practical wisdom and teachings on righteous living. It is a collection of sayings and observations that provide guidance for making wise choices in various areas of life.

Understanding the verse:

  • “The wicked worketh a deceitful work”:This phrase refers to the actions of the wicked, who engage in deceitful and dishonest activities. Their actions are contrary to the principles of righteousness and honesty.
  • “But to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward”:In contrast to the wicked, those who live righteously and follow God’s ways will experience a certain and guaranteed reward for their actions.
  • Principles and lessons:
  • Deceitful work leads to negative consequences:The verse highlights the outcome of the wicked’s actions. Deceitful work may bring temporary gains or benefits, but it ultimately leads to negative consequences and does not yield lasting rewards.
  • Righteousness leads to sure rewards:Those who sow righteousness, meaning they live in accordance with God’s commands and principles, will experience a sure reward. This implies that living a righteous life brings blessings and favour from God.
  • God is just and rewards righteousness:The verse reflects the justice of God. He ensures that the righteous are rewarded for their faithfulness and obedience. It emphasises the idea that God sees and values righteousness, and He will not overlook or ignore the righteous actions of His people.
  • Application:

    • Pursue righteousness:The verse encourages us to prioritise righteousness in our actions and decisions. We should strive to live according to God’s Word, seeking to do what is right and just in His sight.
    • Avoid deceitful practices:We should be cautious not to engage in deceitful or dishonest activities, as they are contrary to God’s nature and principles. Instead, we should act with integrity and honesty.
    • Trust in God’s rewards:The verse reminds us that God is faithful to reward those who live righteously. Even when it may seem that the wicked prosper, we can trust that God’s justice will prevail and that our reward is certain.

Overall, Proverbs 11:18 teaches us about the consequences of our actions and the importance of living righteously. It encourages us to avoid deceitful practices and pursue righteousness, knowing that God rewards those who faithfully follow His ways.
