Proverbs 11:18

The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.

Proverbs 11:18 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is known for its practical wisdom and teachings on righteous living. It is a collection of sayings and observations that provide guidance for making wise choices in various areas of life. This verse presents a clear contrast between two kinds of work and their outcomes.

The first phrase, “The wicked worketh a deceitful work,” describes the actions of the wicked, who engage in dishonest and fraudulent activities. Their work is deceitful because it promises gain or success but does not deliver what it appears to offer. It is ultimately empty and temporary.

In contrast, “to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward” uses the image of sowing seed. Sowing implies patient, ongoing investment in right living, with the expectation of a future harvest. The reward for such sowing is described as “sure,” meaning certain and guaranteed. This is not a vague hope but a firm promise from God.

This contrast between the way of the wicked and the way of the righteous is a recurring theme in Proverbs. Wisdom and righteousness lead to life and blessing, while wickedness leads to ruin. The certainty of the reward rests on God’s faithfulness, not on immediate circumstances.

Deceitful work may bring temporary gains, but it ultimately leads to negative consequences and does not yield lasting rewards. The verse encourages us to prioritise righteousness in our actions and decisions, living according to God’s Word and seeking to do what is right and just in His sight.

We should be cautious not to engage in deceitful or dishonest activities, as they are contrary to God’s nature and principles. Instead, we should act with integrity and honesty, trusting that God is faithful to reward those who live righteously. Even when it may seem that the wicked prosper, we can trust that God’s justice will prevail and that our reward is certain.

Proverbs 11:18 teaches us about the consequences of our actions and the importance of living righteously. It encourages us to avoid deceitful practices and pursue righteousness, knowing that God rewards those who faithfully follow His ways. The reward may not be immediate or material, but it is assured by God’s faithfulness.
