Proverbs 11:24

Listen to this article

There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more then is meete, but it tendeth to pouertie. Proverbs 11:24 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book in the Old Testament known for its wisdom literature, offering practical guidance for righteous living. This particular verse highlights the concept of generosity and its rewards.

The liberal soul shall be made fat: the term “liberal” here does not refer to a political ideology but to generosity and open‑handedness. It describes a person who freely gives, shares, and blesses others with material possessions, time, or talents. To be “made fat” implies that such a person will be enriched or blessed abundantly, experiencing increase and prosperity in various aspects of life as a result of their open‑hearted giving.

He that watereth shall be watered also himself: this phrase uses the metaphor of watering to convey the principle of reciprocity. Just as one who waters a plant ensures its growth and well‑being, so too does the act of generously giving to others result in receiving blessings in return. The one who refreshes and blesses others will find themselves refreshed and blessed in their own circumstances.

Overall, Proverbs 11:25 encourages a spirit of generosity and selflessness. It teaches that those who freely give of themselves and their resources to benefit others will experience a reciprocal outpouring of blessings in their own lives. The passage reflects the biblical principle of sowing and reaping, where acts of kindness and generosity yield rewards in due time. Believers are urged to cultivate a generous heart, recognizing that giving not only impacts others positively but also leads to personal abundance and well‑being, creating a ripple effect that blesses both others and ourselves.
