Proverbs 15:4

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.

Proverbs 15:4 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Old Testament. It gives practical guidance for living a righteous life. This verse focuses on the power of our words and their effect on others.

The verse contrasts two kinds of speech. A “wholesome tongue” is like a “tree of life.” In the Bible, the tree of life stands for God’s blessing, wisdom, and vitality. So wholesome words bring nourishment, healing, and encouragement. The Hebrew word for “wholesome” can also mean “gentle,” “soothing,” or “healing.” Such speech calms and restores, reflecting a person filled with godly character.

On the other hand, “perverseness therein” means crooked, deceitful, or twisted words. These words cause harm. The verse calls this a “breach in the spirit.” A breach is a break or wound. Perverse speech crushes the spirit of the hearer and can also damage the speaker’s inner being. It disrupts peace and fractures relationships.

This teaching echoes other wisdom passages. For example, Proverbs 18:21 says that death and life are in the power of the tongue. Both verses agree that speech has serious consequences. The tree of life also appears in Genesis and Revelation, reminding us that God’s life-giving power is at work when we speak truth and love. In Scripture, the tree of life is a picture of God’s provision and eternal blessing, showing that our words can carry that same life-giving quality.

We are called to use words that build up. Before speaking, we can ask whether our words are true, kind, and helpful. A gentle answer can soothe anger, while harsh words can inflame it. We should avoid gossip, lies, and sarcasm that wound others. Instead, we can offer praise, comfort, and honest encouragement. Cultivate a tongue that brings healing, avoiding the perversity that breaks the spirit of others. This means choosing speech that imparts life, reflecting the wisdom and character of God in every conversation.

Our tongue reveals what fills our heart. When we stay close to God, his wisdom shapes our speech. Let us ask him to make our words a source of life. May we be known for speaking in a way that heals and strengthens those around us.
