Proverbs 14:17

He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.

Proverbs 14:17 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Old Testament, attributed mainly to King Solomon. It consists of short, concise sayings that offer practical guidance for living a righteous and prosperous life. Proverbs 14:17 is part of a larger collection of verses that explore different aspects of human behavior and character, contrasting wisdom with foolishness.

The verse presents two kinds of harmful behavior. First, “He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly” describes a person who quickly gives in to anger and reacts impulsively. The Hebrew word for “soon angry” conveys a hasty spirit, one who shows anger in the face without restraint. Such hasty actions lead to regrettable outcomes, strained relationships, and negative consequences. The verse encourages self-control and patience, so that responses are thoughtful rather than rash.

Second, “a man of wicked devices is hated” focuses on someone who deliberately plans evil. This person may hide anger, cover resentment, and plot revenge or schemes, waiting for an opportunity to carry them out. The phrase “wicked devices” implies intentional planning of evil, not just a momentary lapse. Such a person is rightly despised by others, because his malice is hidden and deliberate. While the quick-tempered person may be pitied because his folly is evident, the schemer is hated because his wickedness is calculated.

This verse aligns with the broader biblical teaching on anger and the heart. Proverbs 14:29 says that he who is slow to wrath has great understanding, reinforcing the value of patience and the danger of impulsive anger that this verse presents.

Cultivate patience and self-control. Recognize the destructive nature of uncontrolled anger and strive to develop patience, which allows for thoughtful and measured responses in challenging situations. Seek God’s help in managing emotions and reacting wisely.

Foster kindness and empathy. Rather than harboring wicked devices or ill intentions toward others, focus on cultivating a heart of kindness, compassion, and empathy. Treat others with love and respect, seeking their well-being instead of causing harm.

Pursue righteousness and integrity. Embrace righteousness and integrity in all areas of life. Act justly and honestly, avoiding schemes or actions that could cause harm or distress to others. Aim to build healthy and positive relationships with those around you.

Seek wisdom from God. Proverbs is a book of wisdom, and throughout its verses there is an underlying call to seek wisdom from God. Pray for guidance and discernment in daily life, seeking to align your thoughts and actions with God’s will.

Proverbs 14:17 reminds us of the importance of controlling our anger and avoiding wicked intentions. It encourages us to pursue wisdom, righteousness, and compassion in our interactions with others. By doing so, we can build positive relationships and avoid the negative consequences that arise from hasty actions and malicious intent.
