Proverbs 14:16
A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.
Proverbs 14:16 (KJV)
Context
Proverbs is wisdom literature that gives practical guidance for daily life. This verse contrasts two kinds of people: the wise and the foolish.
Meaning
The wise man “feareth.” This is not terror but reverence and awe for God—deep respect for His holiness, justice, and authority. Such fear is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). Because he fears God, the wise man “departeth from evil.” He actively turns away from sin, stands at a distance from it, and abstains from all appearance of evil. His caution flows from love for God, not merely fear of punishment. This reverent fear leads him to avoid actions, thoughts, and behaviors contrary to God’s commandments.
The fool “rageth, and is confident.” He is hotheaded, easily angered, and reckless. His confidence rests not in God but in himself. Feeling safe in his own choices, he does not see the danger of evil and continues in sin without concern. His false security leads him to transgress and remain in evil. The fool’s anger and self-assurance blind him to the consequences of his ways.
Biblical connections
Throughout Proverbs, the wise listen to instruction and turn from evil, while the fool trusts his own heart and falls into trouble. This verse shows that true wisdom is not mere knowledge; it is a life that departs from evil. The wise are cautious and careful; the fool is careless and rash. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and it leads to a life that honors Him.
Application
Do we fear God with reverence? Do we turn away from evil, or do we stay close to it? The wise person is careful and humble; the fool is proud and careless. We are called to examine our hearts, avoid occasions of sin, and choose the path of wisdom. Let us be cautious in our daily choices, standing at a distance from sin.
Reflection
God gives wisdom to those who seek Him. When we revere Him, we learn to hate evil and love what is good. Let us pray for a heart that fears God and departs from evil, so that our lives may honor Him.
