Proverbs 15:9

The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the Lord: but he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.

Proverbs 15:9 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of practical wisdom for living a God-honoring life. Proverbs 15:9 contrasts the way of the wicked with the way of the righteous. The immediate context includes the Lord’s eyes on the evil and the good (15:3), the sacrifice of the wicked being an abomination (15:8), and the path of life for those who heed correction (15:10).

“The way of the wicked” refers to the whole course and tenor of a person’s life—the path his heart devises, which he chooses, delights in, and walks in. This way is evil, and therefore it is an abomination to the Lord. While a person continues in a course of sin, even his religious exercises and external duties are abominable to God and cannot be pleasing or acceptable to Him.

In contrast, God loves the one who “followeth after righteousness.” The Hebrew verb carries the idea of pursuing or chasing after something with diligence. This pursuit is not a passive wish but an active, earnest seeking. It is the evidence of a heart that God delights in. The verse does not teach that we earn God’s love by our pursuit; rather, it reveals that God takes pleasure in those who sincerely seek righteousness.

The verse’s structure is a strong antithetical parallelism: the wicked person’s way is an abomination, but the righteous pursuer is loved. This is a foundational wisdom principle: God’s response to a person corresponds to the direction of that person’s life. The verse also implies that religious activity without a righteous life is worthless to God.

This verse calls us to examine the direction of our lives. We should actively pursue righteousness, not merely wish for it. This involves aligning our actions with God’s standards and seeking His wisdom daily. Sin brings separation from God and ultimately leads to destruction, so we must be mindful of the path we follow.

God’s love is extended to all people. He desires sinners to turn from their wicked ways and embrace righteousness. This love is shown through Jesus Christ, who offers forgiveness and redemption to all who believe. As believers, we should earnestly seek righteousness, cultivating a relationship with God through prayer, studying His Word, and allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us.

By following after righteousness, we reflect God’s character to the world. Our lives can testify to His love and grace, influencing others toward the path of righteousness. Remember, Proverbs offers general principles for wise living, not absolute promises. Heeding this wisdom helps us align with God’s will and experience the blessings of faithful living.

Only the powerful grace of God can divert a person from the wicked way. The verse stands as a clear call to examine the direction of one’s life and to pursue righteousness as the object of God’s love.
