Proverbs 15:12

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.”

Context:This verse addresses the nature and response of a scorner, or a mocker, to correction or rebuke.

Let’s break it down and explore its meaning and implications.

“A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him”: Scorners are individuals who ridicule, mock, or scorn others. They have a disdainful attitude and are resistant to instruction or correction. When someone attempts to reprove or correct a scorner, they will not respond with love or appreciation. Instead, they reject the person who reproves them.

“Neither will he go unto the wise”: This means that a scorner will not seek the company or advice of wise individuals. They are unwilling to humble themselves and acknowledge their need for guidance or counsel from those who possess wisdom and knowledge. The scorner’s pride and arrogance prevent them from benefiting from the wisdom of others.

From this verse, we can derive several key insights:

The Nature of a Scorner:The verse highlights the negative character traits of a scorner. They are resistant to correction, lack humility, and have a dismissive attitude towards others. This behavior is not conducive to personal growth or healthy relationships.

Unwillingness to Receive Correction:Scorners have a deep aversion to being corrected or reproved. They do not value or appreciate the input or advice of others, even if it comes from wise individuals who have their best interests at heart.

Lack of Engagement with Wisdom:The scorner’s refusal to seek the company of the wise and benefit from their wisdom hinders their personal development and understanding. They miss out on the opportunity to gain knowledge, perspective, and guidance that could help them make wiser choices.

Importance of Humility and Teachability:The verse indirectly highlights the significance of humility and teachability. A person who is humble and open to correction can grow in wisdom and understanding. They recognize the value of seeking advice from wise individuals and are willing to learn from others.

In summary, Proverbs 15:12 warns against the detrimental attitudes and behaviours of scoffers or mockers. It emphasises the importance of humility, teachability, and the willingness to receive correction and guidance from wise individuals. By adopting these qualities, one can grow in wisdom and build healthier relationships.
