Proverbs 15:12
A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.
Proverbs 15:12 (KJV)
Context
This proverb contrasts two kinds of people: the scorner and the wise. A scorner is a mocker who treats others with contempt and resists instruction. The verse shows how such a person responds when someone tries to correct him.
Meaning
The first part says the scorner does not love the one who reproves him. Reproof is correction given for a person’s good. Instead of receiving it with gratitude, the scorner rejects and even hates the one who cares enough to correct him. His pride makes him see correction as an attack rather than a gift. The Septuagint calls him “uninstructed,” showing that his rejection of correction keeps him from learning.
The second part says he will not go to the wise. He refuses to seek the company or counsel of those who could help him. He will not humble himself to admit that he needs guidance. His arrogance keeps him away from the very people who could lead him toward wisdom. This self-imposed isolation cuts him off from the help he needs most.
Biblical connections
This verse fits the wider teaching of Proverbs, where wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord and grows through accepting correction. The wise person listens to advice, while the fool rejects it. The same contrast appears in Proverbs 9:8, where reproving a wise man makes him love you, but reproving a scorner brings shame. That connection shows that the problem is not the correction itself but the condition of the heart.
Application
Each reader should examine his own response to correction. Do we welcome a gentle rebuke, or do we turn away? Humility and teachability open the door to growth. When we value wisdom, we will seek out godly counselors and listen when they speak truth into our lives.
At the same time, this verse warns us not to be surprised when some people reject our help. We can offer correction with love, but we cannot force a scorner to receive it. Our responsibility is to speak the truth gently and to keep our own hearts soft before God.
Reflection
Consider how you react when someone points out a fault. Do you become defensive, or do you listen? The scorner isolates himself from the help he needs most. The wise person grows through correction and finds life. Choose humility, and you will walk in the path of wisdom.
