Proverbs 15:18

Listen to this article

“18 A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed primarily to King Solomon. The overarching theme of Proverbs is wisdom and how it relates to various aspects of life. The verses in Proverbs offer practical guidance for living a righteous and fruitful life before God and others. Proverbs 15:18 focuses on the topic of anger and its consequences.

Analyzing the Verse:“A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.”

– “A wrathful man stirreth up strife”: This phrase emphasises the destructive power of anger when it is uncontrolled or misdirected. A person who is prone to wrath tends to provoke conflicts and arguments, stirring up strife and discord among others. This behaviour leads to division and disharmony in relationships.

– “But he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife”: In contrast to the wrathful person, someone who is slow to anger exercises self-control and restraint. They have the ability to calm and diffuse tense situations, resolving conflicts and promoting peace. Being slow to anger allows for patience, understanding, and the opportunity for reconciliation.

Key Lessons:

  • The danger of uncontrolled anger:The verse highlights the destructive potential of anger. When allowed to run rampant, anger can escalate disagreements and create a hostile environment. It is essential to guard against becoming easily provoked or allowing anger to control our actions.
  • The importance of self-control:The verse encourages individuals to cultivate self-control and not allow anger to dictate their behaviour. Responding to conflicts with patience and thoughtfulness helps to prevent unnecessary strife and contributes to healthier relationships.
  • The power of peacemaking:Being slow to anger enables us to be agents of peace. By demonstrating patience, understanding, and forgiveness, we can help resolve conflicts and promote harmony in our interactions with others. Peacemaking is an essential aspect of living out the values of God’s kingdom.
  • Application:

    • Cultivating self-control:Reflect on your own tendencies toward anger and commit to developing greater self-control. Seek God’s help through prayer and rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit to respond to challenging situations in a calm and measured manner.
    • Pursuing reconciliation:When conflicts arise, strive to be a peacemaker. Take the initiative to understand the perspectives of others, practice active listening, and engage in respectful dialogue. Seek resolutions that promote understanding, forgiveness, and restoration.
    • Seeking wisdom:Proverbs emphasises the importance of wisdom in all areas of life. Regularly engage in the study of God’s Word and seek wise counsel from trusted mentors or spiritual leaders. Wisdom enables us to navigate conflicts with discernment and make choices that lead to peace and unity.

Remember that the Bible offers timeless wisdom, and Proverbs 15:18 provides valuable insights into the destructive nature of unchecked anger and the positive impact of patience and self-control in promoting peace and reconciliation.
