Proverbs 15:17

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.”

Context and Background:The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature in the Old Testament. It consists of practical advice and insights on various aspects of life, including relationships, morality, work, and speech. Proverbs 15:17 specifically focuses on the importance of love and contentment in comparison to material abundance mixed with animosity.

Symbolism:The verse uses two contrasting images to convey its message. “A dinner of herbs” represents a simple meal, often associated with limited resources or a modest lifestyle. On the other hand, a “stalled ox” refers to a well-fattened and prized animal for a luxurious feast.

Better is a dinner of herbs where love is:This phrase highlights the significance of love and harmony within a humble setting. It suggests that even a meager meal shared with love, kindness, and unity surpasses a lavish feast where there is hatred or discord. The verse emphasizes the value of relational well-being and spiritual nourishment over material wealth.

Stalled ox and hatred therewith:While having an abundance of material possessions, such as a stalled ox (a symbol of opulence and prosperity), may seem desirable, it becomes meaningless and even detrimental when coupled with hatred. The verse warns against the destructive power of animosity, envy, and strife, which can poison relationships and nullify the enjoyment of material blessings.

Application and Lessons:a. Prioritizing Love: The verse reminds us that love and healthy relationships are more important than material possessions. It encourages us to prioritize cultivating love, peace, and harmony within our families, friendships, and communities.

b. Contentment and Gratitude: It teaches us the value of contentment and gratitude for what we have, even if it may be modest. True satisfaction comes from appreciating the blessings of love and companionship rather than pursuing material wealth alone.

c. Guarding Against Hatred: The verse also cautions against the destructive power of hatred and discord. It encourages us to foster forgiveness, reconciliation, and unity, understanding that these qualities are essential for a fulfilling and meaningful life.

d. Perspective on Material Wealth: While material abundance can be a blessing, it should never take precedence over our relationships or become a source of division. This verse reminds us to maintain a healthy perspective on wealth and use it to serve others rather than allowing it to breed envy or strife.

Overall, Proverbs 15:17 encourages us to prioritise love, contentment, and harmonious relationships over material wealth. It reminds us that the quality of our relationships and the presence of love in our lives are the true sources of joy and fulfilment.
