Proverbs 16:5

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“Everyone that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.”

Understanding the context:The Book of Proverbs is known for its wisdom literature, offering practical advice on various aspects of life. Proverbs 16:5 emphasizes the Lord’s view of pride and its consequences.

Pride as an abomination:The verse begins by stating that “everyone that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD.” Pride refers to an inflated sense of self-importance, a haughty attitude, or an exalted view of oneself. The Lord considers pride detestable or an abomination because it opposes humility and can lead to destructive behaviour.

God’s response to pride:The verse continues by declaring that “though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.” This phrase suggests that even if the proud person seeks alliances or forms alliances with others, they will not escape divine judgment. God is just and will not let pride go unpunished. This verse emphasises the certainty of divine retribution for those who persist in prideful ways.

Application of the verse:Proverbs 16:5 serves as a warning against pride and its consequences. It encourages believers to cultivate humility, recognising their dependence on God and acknowledging that all good things come from Him. Pride hinders our relationship with God and can lead to arrogance, self-centredness, and a disregard for others. Instead, we are called to humble ourselves before God, acknowledging His sovereignty and seeking His guidance and wisdom in all things.

Related verses:Several other passages in the Bible address the issue of pride. Proverbs 11:2 states, “When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.” This verse emphasises that pride ultimately leads to disgrace, whereas humility is associated with wisdom. Jesus Himself taught about humility in Luke 14:11, saying, “For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” This teaching reinforces the importance of humility before God.

In conclusion, Proverbs 16:5 cautions against the dangers of pride and highlights God’s disdain for the proud. It reminds us that pride will not go unpunished and encourages us to cultivate humility in our lives, recognising our need for God and seeking His wisdom.
