Proverbs 16:7

When a man’s ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.

Proverbs 16:7 (KJV)

Proverbs is wisdom literature in the Old Testament, traditionally linked to Solomon. It offers practical guidance for daily life, covering work, speech, relationships, and morality. This verse shows how a person’s conduct relates to God and to those who oppose them.

The first part speaks of a man whose ways please the Lord. This means his whole life—thoughts, words, and actions—is aligned with God’s will. He walks according to God’s Word, follows Christ’s example, and lives by faith, because without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). Pleasing God is not a single act but a consistent direction of life.

The second part says that God makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. This is not a promise that everyone will like him or agree with him. Rather, it shows God’s power to change hostile hearts. When a person honors God, God can overrule human anger and bring about peace. The peace is God’s work, not the result of human manipulation or effort.

Scripture gives examples of God doing this. When Isaac lived among the Philistines, Abimelech came to make a treaty of peace with him because he saw that the Lord was with Isaac (Genesis 26:26-29). Later, Jacob feared his brother Esau, but God softened Esau’s heart so that the brothers met in peace (Genesis 33:4). These stories show that God can change the attitude of an enemy when a person’s ways please Him.

This verse encourages believers to focus on pleasing God, even when facing opposition. Instead of trying to control others or force peace, the believer is called to obey God and trust Him with relationships. Our behavior matters; a life that honors God can have a positive influence on those around us, including those who are hostile. This does not mean we ignore conflict, but we rely on God to work in hearts. The outcome of peace is God’s work, not our manipulation.

Consider your own ways. Are they pleasing to the Lord? When you face an enemy, do you first seek to please God, or do you try to fix the situation yourself? This verse invites you to live in a way that honors God, leaving the outcome of relationships in His hands. God is able to bring peace where there was enmity, and He often does so through the quiet witness of a faithful life. Trust Him to handle your conflicts and to give you grace to walk in obedience.
