Proverbs 16:7
“When a man’s ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.”
Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature found in the Old Testament. It contains practical advice on various aspects of life, including relationships, work, speech, and morality. Proverbs 16:7 focuses on the importance of pleasing the Lord and its impact on our relationships, specifically with our enemies.
Pleasing the Lord:The verse begins by emphasizing the significance of a person’s ways pleasing the Lord. This implies living according to God’s principles, following His commands, and seeking to honour Him in all areas of life. Pleasing the Lord involves aligning our thoughts, actions, and attitudes with His will.
Enemies at Peace:The verse continues by stating that when a person’s ways please the Lord, He makes even their enemies be at peace with them. This does not mean that everyone will automatically become friendly or supportive, but rather that God can influence and transform hostile relationships.
God’s Work in Relationships:The verse highlights the power and sovereignty of God in reconciling and bringing about peace in difficult relationships. It suggests that when we prioritise pleasing God, He can intervene and change the hearts and attitudes of those who oppose us, leading to reconciliation and peaceful interactions.
The Influence of Our Actions:The verse implies that our ways and behaviour have a significant impact on how others respond to us. When we live in a manner that pleases the Lord, it often results in a positive influence on our relationships, including those with our enemies. Our actions and attitudes can have a transformative effect on others, even those who may harbour animosity towards us.
Application:Proverbs 16:7 encourages us to prioritise living a life that pleases God, even in the face of opposition or enmity. By doing so, we open the door for God’s intervention and transformation in our relationships.
