Proverbs 16:23

The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips.

Proverbs 16:23 (KJV)

Proverbs is an Old Testament book of practical wisdom for righteous living, mainly attributed to King Solomon. This verse sits among teachings that link wisdom with careful speech. The surrounding verses commend the wise in heart for their persuasive and pleasant words, showing that wise speech is valued in this part of Scripture.

In the Bible, the heart is the center of thoughts, desires, and character. The wise are those who fear the Lord, for that is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). Here, the wise heart teaches the mouth, guiding what to say, when to say it, and before whom. Such speech is not impulsive but weighed and discerning. The heart instructs the mouth with substance, so the speaker knows what words fit the moment.

The second part says the wise add learning to their lips. Their words instruct and build up others. This is not mere eloquence; it is speech that increases understanding in the hearer. The heart’s wisdom becomes a source of edification, so that every word carries substance and grace. True wisdom is not only intellectual but rooted in the inner person, and it shows in speech that teaches.

Jesus said that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). Luke 6:45 echoes this truth, showing that speech reveals what fills the inner person. So the pursuit of wisdom must begin inside, not just in outward behavior. A heart shaped by the fear of the Lord naturally produces instructive words. This verse does not promise that the wise never err in speech, but it presents the ideal of a heart so full of wisdom that it guides the mouth.

Believers should cultivate a wise heart through meditation on God’s truth and prayer for wisdom, which He gives generously (James 1:5). Guard your heart (Proverbs 4:23), for what fills it will eventually come out in speech. Let your words teach, encourage, and season grace and truth. Seek wisdom from God daily, so that your lips add learning to those who hear you.

Ask God to fill your heart with His wisdom so that your lips may add learning to those who hear you.
