Proverbs 17:13

Listen to this article

“Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.”

Context:It is important to understand the context of this verse within the book of Proverbs. Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed to King Solomon. It offers practical wisdom for daily living and addresses various aspects of human behaviour and character.

Understanding the verse:Proverbs 17:13 speaks about the consequences of repaying evil for good. It warns that if someone responds to acts of kindness or good deeds with evil or ill-will, then they can expect negative consequences in their own life, symbolised by evil not departing from their house.

  • Gratitude and reciprocation:This verse highlights the importance of gratitude and reciprocating kindness. When someone does good to us, it is appropriate and honourable to respond with gratitude and kindness rather than with evil or harm. It encourages us to be mindful of the intentions behind others’ actions and to respond in a manner that reflects our character and integrity.
  • Sowing and reaping:Proverbs often teaches about the principle of sowing and reaping, where our actions have consequences. If we sow seeds of evil or unkindness, we can expect to reap negative consequences in our own lives. This verse serves as a reminder that our actions have ripple effects, and we should strive to sow seeds of goodness and kindness.
  • Household implications:The reference to “his house” in this verse suggests that the consequences of repaying evil for good can extend beyond an individual to impact their family or household. Our actions not only affect us but can also have a profound impact on those closest to us. It serves as a reminder that our choices and behaviour have implications for our relationships and the overall atmosphere within our homes.
  • Moral guidance:Proverbs 17:13 provides moral guidance by urging us to choose our responses wisely. When someone does us good, we should respond with appreciation, kindness, and integrity. By doing so, we foster a virtuous cycle of goodness that can positively impact our lives and the lives of those around us.

In summary, Proverbs 17:13 emphasises the importance of responding to acts of kindness with gratitude and kindness, rather than repaying evil. It warns that repaying evil for good will lead to negative consequences. This verse encourages us to be mindful of our actions, understanding that our choices have implications not only for ourselves but also for our households and relationships. It offers practical wisdom for cultivating a virtuous and righteous life.
