Proverbs 18:12

Listen to this article

“Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Old Testament, and it offers practical guidance for living a righteous and fruitful life. Proverbs 18:12 is a proverbial statement that contrasts the attitudes of pride and humility.

The Heart of Man:The “heart” in this verse refers to the innermost being of a person, including their thoughts, emotions, and will. It represents the core of one’s character and reveals their true nature.

Haughty Heart:The verse states that “before destruction the heart of man is haughty.” “Haughty” means having an excessively proud or arrogant attitude, looking down on others, and considering oneself superior. It is a negative quality that can lead to downfall and ruin.

Destruction:The word “destruction” here implies the consequences of pride and arrogance. It signifies ruin, downfall, or calamity that can befall those who exhibit haughty behavior. It warns of the negative outcomes that result from an inflated sense of self-importance.

Humility and Honor:The second part of the verse states that “before honor is humility.” In contrast to pride, humility is the virtue of having a modest and lowly view of oneself. It involves recognizing our limitations, valuing others, and acknowledging our dependence on God.

Connection between Humility and Honor:The verse suggests that humility is a prerequisite for receiving honor. When we approach life with humility, acknowledging our need for God’s guidance and the contributions of others, we position ourselves to receive honor and blessings from God and those around us. Humility allows us to grow in character and gain respect.

Application:This verse encourages us to examine our hearts and attitudes. It reminds us to avoid pride and arrogance, which can lead to destruction. Instead, we are called to cultivate humility, recognizing that it opens the door to honor and blessings in our relationships, endeavors, and spiritual journey.

  • Other Scripture References:The theme of humility and pride is found throughout the Bible. Here are a few related verses to further explore:
  • James 4:6 (NIV): “But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’”
  • Matthew 23:12 (NIV): “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
  • Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV): “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

By studying and applying these passages, we can deepen our understanding of humility and its importance in our lives.

Remember, this study is based on the King James Version (KJV) translation. It is always beneficial to explore different translations and consult other resources to gain a comprehensive understanding of the biblical teachings.
