Proverbs 18:10

The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

Proverbs 18:10 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, attributed to King Solomon. It offers practical guidance for living in a way that honors God. This verse sits between a warning about laziness and a statement about the rich trusting in their wealth, so it directs the reader to place confidence in the Lord rather than in human effort or resources.

In biblical times, a person’s name represented their identity, character, and authority. The name of the Lord, Yahweh, points to God Himself and all that He is: His power, faithfulness, and presence. The verse calls this name a strong tower, an image of a defensive structure where people fled for safety during an attack. Such a tower gave a high vantage point to see danger from a distance and a secure place to hide during a siege.

The righteous are those who are in a right relationship with God through faith and obedience. They run into this tower, showing urgency, trust, and deliberate action. Running implies that they do not hesitate or rely on their own strength. The result is safety: protection, deliverance, and peace that covers both physical and spiritual well-being. This safety is not passive; it comes through intentional trust and dependence on God.

This verse contrasts with the following one, Proverbs 18:11, where the rich trust in their wealth as a high wall. Here, the only true refuge is the name of the Lord. Throughout Scripture, God’s name is a place of refuge for those who call on Him, and His protection is available to all who seek Him in faith. The name of the Lord is accessible to everyone who calls upon Him, and it is a refuge that never fails.

  • Trust in God’s name: find comfort and security in His character and promises.

  • Seek His presence: actively pursue a close relationship with Him through prayer, worship, and reading His Word.

  • Depend on God’s strength: rely on His guidance rather than your own abilities.

  • Find refuge in God: when facing challenges, run to Him for safety, knowing He will protect and provide.

This verse invites us to examine where we place our trust. In times of trouble, do we run to the Lord first, or do we depend on our own resources? The strong tower is always open, and God’s name is a refuge that never fails. By intentionally seeking Him, we can experience His peace and deliverance in every circumstance. The tower is not distant; it is near to all who call on Him, and His protection is certain for those who trust in Him.
