Proverbs 18:9

Posted on 18 May at 11:22

Hee also that is slouthful in his worke, is brother to him that is a great waster. Proverbs 18:9 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom sayings attributed to King Solomon, offering practical guidance for living a wise and righteous life. This particular proverb highlights the character of a slothful person. Slothfulness refers to a lack of diligence, energy, or motivation in fulfilling one’s responsibilities or tasks, a negative trait that can hinder productivity and growth.

The verse emphasizes the importance of a diligent and responsible attitude toward work. God designed human beings to work and be productive (Genesis 2:15), and the Bible repeatedly praises diligence and hard work as virtues (Proverbs 10:4; Colossians 3:23). By stating that the slothful are “brother to him that is a great waster,” the proverb draws a direct comparison between laziness and wastefulness. The phrase “great waster” conveys the idea of someone who is wasteful, extravagant, or careless with resources, essentially an idle person who squanders what has been entrusted to them.

The implication is clear: laziness and wastefulness are closely linked in their negative effects. Both lead to unproductive and unfulfilled lives, and both reflect a failure of stewardship. The proverb also serves as a warning against associating with people who exhibit such characteristics, as their habits can negatively influence one’s own behavior and choices.

Practical application of this proverb encourages believers to cultivate a strong work ethic and to avoid laziness. It calls for diligence in all responsibilities—whether in careers, relationships, or other areas of life—and urges wise stewardship of resources. By being mindful of how we use what God has entrusted to us, we honor Him and avoid the pitfalls of sloth and wastefulness.
