When the wicked commeth, then commeth also contempt, and with ignominie, reproch. Proverbs 18:3 (KJV)

When the wicked cometh,

then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach. Proverbs 18: 3 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed primarily to King Solomon, offering practical advice for living wisely and virtuously. Proverbs 18:3 highlights the consequences of wickedness and the contempt and reproach that accompany it, and it also warns that the wicked become entangled in trouble while the righteous are delivered from it. “When the wicked come, they shall be snared together; but the righteous shall depart out of the trouble.”

The term “wickedness” (or “wicked”) refers to evil, immoral, or sinful behavior. The Bible often distinguishes between the righteous and the wicked, emphasizing the stark contrast between their paths and their outcomes. Those who reject God’s ways and pursue selfish desires are described as wicked.

When wickedness enters a situation or community, contempt often follows. Contempt is a feeling of scorn, disdain, or disrespect toward someone or something, and it provokes negative reactions from others because of the wicked person’s disregard for righteousness. Ignominy means shame, disgrace, or dishonor; wickedness brings shame and dishonor upon itself, often through exposure of wrongdoing, consequences faced, or loss of respect and reputation. Reproach means criticism, rebuke, or condemnation, and it serves as a reminder and warning that such behavior is unacceptable and requires change.

Proverbs 18:3 teaches important spiritual lessons. It reminds us that the path of wickedness leads to contempt, ignominy, reproach, and entanglement in trouble. When we reject God’s ways and indulge in sin, we face consequences that affect not only ourselves but also those around us. The passage warns against wickedness and encourages pursuing righteousness, integrity, and obedience to God.

Throughout Proverbs, a sharp contrast is drawn between the wicked and the righteous. The righteous fear God, seek His wisdom, and live according to His commands. While the wicked face contempt, ignominy, reproach, and hardship, the righteous find favor with God and others and are delivered from trouble.

In summary, Proverbs 18:3 reminds us that when wickedness comes, it brings contempt, ignominy, reproach, and snaring trouble, whereas the righteous are protected and delivered. It serves as a warning against engaging in wicked behavior and encourages us to pursue righteousness, integrity, and a life pleasing to God.
