Proverbs 20:15

There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

Proverbs 20:15 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is known for its collection of practical wisdom and advice for living a righteous and successful life. It contains numerous short, concise statements known as proverbs, which are designed to convey timeless truths and insights. This verse, attributed to Solomon, contrasts material wealth with the value of wise speech.

The verse begins by highlighting two valuable possessions: gold and rubies. Gold has long been considered a symbol of wealth and prosperity, and rubies are precious gemstones known for their beauty and rarity. These items represent the tangible wealth that people often desire and pursue. Yet the proverb acknowledges that such riches exist in abundance in the world, found in mines and treasuries.

In contrast, the verse emphasizes the rarity of “lips of knowledge.” Here, “lips” symbolize speech or words, indicating the focus is on those who possess wisdom and knowledge and are able to communicate it effectively. The Hebrew parallelism elevates knowledgeable speech above even the most valuable commodities. Just as a precious gemstone is highly valued and sought after, those who possess wisdom and knowledge are likewise esteemed and cherished. This metaphor emphasizes the scarcity and significance of individuals who possess true wisdom.

While material wealth may be valuable, it pales in comparison to the worth of knowledge and wisdom. Acquiring knowledge and understanding is an invaluable pursuit, and those who possess it are considered to be treasures. The verse also highlights the role of speech in conveying wisdom and understanding, emphasizing the significance of using words to impart knowledge, counsel, and insight to others. Those who possess wisdom have the ability to influence and impact others positively.

This teaching aligns with the broader biblical theme that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and that wisdom is of supreme value. Throughout Proverbs, wisdom is consistently portrayed as more precious than gold, silver, or precious stones.

This verse encourages readers to prioritize the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom rather than being solely focused on material possessions. It reminds us that true wealth lies in the understanding and application of wisdom, and the ability to share that knowledge with others. The practical implication is to value and cultivate speech that is informed by truth and wisdom, recognizing its superior worth.

Consider how you might seek after the rare jewel of wise speech in your own life. What steps can you take to grow in knowledge and to speak with discernment and truth, cherishing this gift above earthly riches?
