Listen to this article

“Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings attributed to King Solomon, known for his wisdom. The purpose of the book is to provide practical guidance for living a righteous and prosperous life, based on the fear of the Lord and adherence to godly wisdom.

Interpretation:– “Love not sleep”: This phrase is a metaphorical expression. It advises against excessive laziness, idleness, and an undisciplined lifestyle. It warns against being consumed by the pursuit of comfort and pleasure that results in neglecting one’s responsibilities and opportunities for productivity.

– “Lest thou come to poverty”: If one loves sleep excessively and neglects their duties, it can lead to poverty. Lack of diligence and productivity can result in financial hardship, missed opportunities, and a lack of provision for one’s needs.

– “Open thine eyes”: This phrase encourages attentiveness, vigilance, and awareness. It implies being watchful and alert to the opportunities and responsibilities that lie before you. It suggests an active engagement with life and a willingness to seize opportunities when they arise.

– “Thou shalt be satisfied with bread”: If one opens their eyes, stays vigilant, and actively engages with life, they will be satisfied with the basic necessities of life, symbolized here by “bread.” It implies that diligence and conscientiousness lead to provision and contentment.

Application:

  • Diligence and Productivity:The verse encourages us to be diligent and productive in our lives. It reminds us to avoid laziness and complacency, recognizing the value of hard work and responsible stewardship of our time and resources.
  • Seeking Opportunities:By opening our eyes, we become aware of the opportunities that surround us. This verse encourages us to remain alert and seize those opportunities, whether they pertain to personal growth, relationships, career advancement, or spiritual development.
  • Contentment and Provision:The verse suggests that when we are diligent and actively engaged in life, we will experience satisfaction and provision. While it acknowledges the importance of material needs, it also implies that true contentment goes beyond physical sustenance and encompasses a sense of fulfilment in various aspects of life.

In summary, Proverbs 20:13 advises against excessive love for sleep and idleness. It emphasises the importance of diligence, attentiveness, and productivity to avoid poverty and experience satisfaction in life. By being vigilant and actively engaging with our responsibilities and opportunities, we can find provision and contentment.
