Proverbs 23:7

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

Proverbs 23:7 (KJV)

This proverb belongs to the wisdom literature of the Old Testament, which offers practical guidance for righteous living. The surrounding passage, Proverbs 23:6-8, warns about dining with a stingy person. That context shows that the saying is not only about personal thoughts but also about discerning insincere people.

The first clause, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he,” teaches that a person’s true character is shaped by innermost thoughts. In the Bible, the heart is the center of a person’s being, including the mind, emotions, and will. Therefore, what a person thinks in the heart is what they really are, regardless of outward words. The second clause, “Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee,” gives a clear example. The host offers an invitation, but his heart is not genuinely with the guest. His words are a mere compliment, not a sincere welcome. This exposes the danger of hypocrisy and the need to align inner intentions with outward actions.

This verse connects with the broader biblical teaching that God looks at the heart, not just outward appearances. For example, 1 Samuel 16:7 reminds us that while people see the outside, the Lord sees the heart. That truth reinforces the proverb’s call to self-examination, urging us to ensure that our thoughts are pure and our motives are honest. The heart’s condition determines the course of our lives, so we must guard it carefully.

We can apply this wisdom by examining our own thoughts and motives. Before we speak or act, we should ask whether our hearts are truly in what we say. We must also be discerning with others, not easily deceived by flattering words. When we offer hospitality or help, let our hearts be fully present, not distant or grudging. Integrity means that our inner thoughts and our outward behavior are consistent. This wisdom also warns us not to covet the delicacies of a selfish host, for such a person’s welcome is not genuine.

This proverb invites us to consider what our thoughts reveal about us. Do our words match the true state of our hearts? By cultivating righteous thoughts, we can live authentically before God and others. Let us pray for honest hearts, so that our actions flow from genuine love and sincerity.
