Proverbs 23:6

Posted on 18 May at 15:09
Listen to this article

“Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature attributed to King Solomon. It provides practical advice for daily living, covering various aspects of life, including relationships, work ethics, finances, and moral conduct. Proverbs 23:6 appears within a section of the book that discusses the pitfalls of associating with the wicked and warns against the dangers of greed and dishonesty.

Symbolism and Meaning:“Bread”: Symbolically represents sustenance, provision, or livelihood. In this context, it refers to benefiting from someone’s offerings or resources.

– “Evil eye”: Suggests a person who is envious, greedy, or harbors ill intentions. It describes someone who looks upon others with covetousness or malicious intent.

– “Dainty meats”: Refers to sumptuous or luxurious delicacies. It represents material possessions, favors, or rewards that may be obtained through association with the person mentioned earlier.

Lesson and Application:

  • Be cautious of those with an “evil eye”:The verse advises against partaking in the provisions or benefits offered by someone who possesses an evil eye. It implies that associating with individuals who are driven by envy, greed, or malicious intent can lead to negative consequences.
  • Avoid desiring their dainty meats:Similarly, the verse warns against coveting or desiring the luxurious rewards or possessions that may be associated with such individuals. It urges us to steer clear of an attitude of greed and the pursuit of ill-gotten gains.

This verse teaches us to be discerning in our associations and to avoid relationships with those who have malicious intentions or engage in dishonest practices. It encourages us to prioritise integrity and to be content with what we have rather than being enticed by worldly possessions or unrighteous means of obtaining them.

In a broader sense, this verse reminds us to seek after godly wisdom and discernment in our daily interactions, ensuring that our choices align with God’s principles of righteousness and justice.
