Proverbs 25:10
Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away.
Proverbs 25:10 (KJV)
Context
Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature attributed to King Solomon. It offers practical guidance for making wise choices and living righteously, addressing topics such as relationships, work, speech, and character. The immediate context of Proverbs 25:10 is a warning about the dangers of revealing a secret or speaking against a neighbor. Verse 9 advises settling a matter privately, and verse 10 explains what can happen if that counsel is ignored.
Meaning
This verse warns that careless words can bring personal shame and lasting dishonor. The phrase “Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame” pictures a situation where the person who hears our negative words confronts us or exposes us as a gossip or slanderer. The second phrase, “and thine infamy turn not away,” stresses that the disgrace does not fade quickly; once a reputation is damaged, it may be very hard to restore. The verse teaches that our words carry serious consequences, both for others and for ourselves.
Biblical connections
Scripture consistently warns about the power of the tongue. Proverbs 21:23 says, “Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.” Ephesians 4:29 advises, “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Proverbs 22:1 reminds us that “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favour is better than silver or gold.” These passages reinforce the value of guarded, edifying speech.
Application
Taming the Tongue: The verse encourages self-control and wisdom when speaking about others. Instead of gossip or slander, we should aim to speak words of encouragement, truth, and love.
Preserving Relationships: Negative words and gossip can harm relationships and destroy trust. We should build others up through our speech, treating them with respect and kindness.
Protecting Our Reputation: Our reputation is a valuable asset. By being mindful of our words, we safeguard our own integrity and prevent unnecessary shame or disgrace.
Seeking Restoration: If we have engaged in gossip or spoken ill of someone, we should seek forgiveness and work toward restoring the relationship. James 5:16 teaches, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.“
Reflection
Dear Lord, help me to guard my words and use them wisely. Teach me to speak words of life, encouragement, and truth. Forgive me for any times I have engaged in gossip or spoken ill of others. Help me to restore relationships where I have caused harm. May my words always bring honour to You and build up those around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
