Proverbs 22:1

Listen to this article

“A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament. It consists of practical teachings and observations about life, often presented in short, memorable sayings. Proverbs 22:1 emphasizes the value of having a good reputation and the importance of cultivating loving relationships.

A good name:In biblical times, a person’s “name” represented their character, reputation, and integrity. It encompassed their whole being and how they were known in the community. Having a “good name” means having a positive reputation, marked by honesty, integrity, and moral uprightness. It reflects a person’s character and conduct.

Choosing a good name:The verse suggests that actively pursuing and choosing a good name is more valuable than acquiring great riches. While wealth and material possessions may bring temporary benefits, a good name has lasting significance. It is a reflection of a person’s inner qualities and impacts how they are perceived and remembered.

The relative value of a good name:The comparison made in this verse highlights the superior worth of a good name over material wealth. It implies that no amount of riches can compensate for a damaged reputation. In a world where people often strive for material success, this proverb serves as a reminder to prioritize character and integrity above worldly possessions.

Loving favor:In addition to a good name, the verse also emphasizes the importance of “loving favor” or loving relationships. It suggests that genuine love and affection from others are more valuable than silver and gold. Material wealth may bring temporary satisfaction, but loving relationships provide enduring joy, support, and fulfillment.

  • – How would you define a “good name” in today’s context?
  • – In what ways can we actively choose and cultivate a good name?
  • – How can we prioritize loving relationships over the pursuit of wealth?
  • – Are there any areas in your life where you need to reevaluate your priorities?

Remember to read the surrounding verses and consider the larger context of Proverbs to gain a deeper understanding of its teachings.
