Proverbs 27:2

Posted on 18 May at 15:09

“Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Bible, attributed mainly to King Solomon. It contains practical teachings on various aspects of life, including relationships, character, work, and morality. Proverbs 27:2 focuses on the importance of humility and the value of receiving genuine praise from others rather than boasting about oneself.

Humility and Praise:The verse begins by emphasising the virtue of humility. It advises against self-promotion or self-praise, suggesting that it is better to have others acknowledge and commend one’s actions or character. This aligns with the biblical value of humility, which is a recognition of one’s limitations and a modest estimation of oneself before God and others.

Authenticity of Praise:The verse further highlights the significance of genuine praise. It suggests that praise is more valuable when it comes from someone else, particularly from those who are not closely acquainted with us, like a stranger. This implies that when praise comes from someone who is unbiased and impartial, it carries more weight and credibility.

The Danger of Self-Promotion:Proverbs 27:2 discourages self-promotion or boasting. Boasting often stems from pride and a desire for personal glory. The verse encourages individuals to focus on developing genuine character and allowing others to recognise and acknowledge their virtues and accomplishments instead of self-aggrandisement.

Wisdom and Humility:Throughout the book of Proverbs, wisdom is highly esteemed. Wisdom is not merely intellectual knowledge but includes understanding and living according to God’s principles. Proverbs teaches that wisdom and humility go hand in hand. Recognising the value of receiving praise from others rather than promoting oneself demonstrates wisdom and humility.

Application:Proverbs 27:2 has practical applications in our daily lives. It reminds us to cultivate humility, recognising that true worth is not found in self-promotion but in developing genuine character and serving others. We should avoid seeking constant recognition and instead focus on faithfully fulfilling our responsibilities and serving God and others with humility.

  • In conclusion:Proverbs 27:2 teaches us the importance of humility and the value of receiving genuine praise from others rather than boasting about ourselves. It encourages us to cultivate authentic character and to allow others, particularly those outside our immediate circles, to acknowledge our virtues and accomplishments. By embracing humility and recognising the significance of genuine praise, we can grow in wisdom and live in a manner that pleases God.
