Listen to this article

A mans pride shall bring him lowe: but honour shall vpholde the humble in spirit. Proverbs 29:23 (KJV)

This verse addresses the theme of pride and its consequences.

Pride: The verse highlights the negative impact of pride. Pride refers to an excessive sense of self‑importance, an inflated view of oneself, or a feeling of superiority. It often leads to arrogance and a disregard for others. The Bible frequently warns against the destructive nature of pride, as it can hinder personal growth, damage relationships, and lead to conflicts. The verse states that pride will bring a person low, emphasizing how arrogance undermines one’s standing.

Honour: In contrast, honour uplifts those who remain humble in spirit. Honour represents respect, dignity, and recognition earned through integrity and humility. When individuals choose humility over pride, they open themselves to receiving honour and maintaining healthy relationships.

Humility and Honour: The second half of the verse contrasts pride with humility, noting that honour upholds those who are humble in spirit. This suggests that modesty and a teachable attitude invite respect and support from others, fostering healthier relationships and a more stable character.

Wisdom: While the verse does not explicitly mention “wisdom” or “being well advised,” many readers understand the principle that humility opens a person to guidance and sound judgment. Seeking counsel and remaining open to learning are consistent with biblical teachings on living wisely.

In summary, Proverbs 29:23 cautions against pride and its detrimental effects on personal standing and relationships. It encourages humility, which leads to honour and healthier interactions with others. By embracing humility and valuing the perspectives of others, we can foster unity, resolve conflicts, and cultivate a more peaceful and prosperous community.
